Frequently Asked Questions

You are considered a first-year student if WSU is the first college you attend after graduating from high school (not counting the summer right after graduation).

If you completed college credit or an associate degree while in high school through Running Start or other dual enrollment programs, you will be granted academic standing based on the number of semester credits transferred to WSU. However, you will still be considered a first-year student for application and admission purposes.

  • 0-29 semester credits: Freshman standing
  • 30-59 semester credits: Sophomore standing
  • 60-89 semester credits: Junior standing

For more information on earning college credit while in high school, visit the College Credit Earned in High School webpage.

No, grades from transfer courses do not count toward WSU GPA. Transfer grades are used in the following ways:

  • Overall transfer GPA is used for admissions purposes.
  • Transfer GPA may be reviewed to ensure you meet program requirements. This varies by program.
  • Individual course grades will be reviewed if they are prerequisites for other WSU courses.

To find out how courses from other institutions will transfer to WSU, you can use the Transfer Course Search Tool.

For exam credits (AP, IB, CLEP, & Cambridge), view how credit will be earned at WSU by visiting our Credit by Exam site.

If you cannot find a course in the Transfer Course Search Tool, it most likely has not been evaluated by WSU faculty. Complete the Course Evaluation Request Form and include syllabus information from the transfer course to have it reviewed by faculty.

Please allow two weeks for evaluation request results to be emailed to you. Note that departmental evaluation timeframes may vary based on the number of courses you are requesting to be evaluated, time of year, and evaluation complexity.

To transfer college credit to WSU, submit an official transcript from the source of transfer credit (e.g. college, exams, military, etc.) to the WSU Office of Admissions. If you earned college credit while in high school, your high school transcript will not be sufficient. If you have received college credit from multiple sources (e.g. attending multiple universities, earning both Running Start credit and taking AP exams in high school, etc.), you will need to send an official transcript from each source.

International college transcripts should be submitted to the WSU Office of International Admissions.

The Transfer Credit Report (TCR) is a report you can access through your myWSU account that displays the evaluation of your transfer credit to WSU. It is created once the WSU Office of Admissions receives official transcripts from your previous institution or other sources of college credit. Visit the Transfer Credit Report webpage for more information on how to interpret your Transfer Credit Report.

The WSU Office of Admissions will notify you once they have received an official transcript. If credit has not been added to your Transfer Credit Report within two weeks of that notice, contact the Transfer Center (transfer@wsu.edu; 509-335-8704).
